Our research group (University of Barcelona) focuses on the study and identification of molecular pathways involved in mitochondrial signaling and function and its involvement in the development of complex diseases, with special emphasis in metabolic diseases and age-related pathologies. Specifically, the group uses both in vitro cell cultured models and in vivo genetically modified mice in order to understand whether alterations in autophagy/mitophagy are a key event in the loss of cell and tissue homeostasis and development of disease. Our final goal is to contribute to a broader understanding on how mitochondrial dysfunction is connected to disease and potentially provide the rationale to target mitochondrial signaling pathways to develop new therapeutic and pharmacological approaches to treat age-related diseases.
