We are interested in revealing the role of autophagy in two interconnected fields: embryology and regeneration. For this purpose, we use the whole potential of zebrafish as an animal model. We are currently investigating the impact of drugs that modulate autophagy on the development of different systems such as the retina and the heart. Our results point that defects on autophagy might be the underlying cause of some congenital diseases. Our other line explores the importance of key selective autophagy pathways (lipophagy and mitophagy) during visual system regeneration. Our results reveal that proper control of autophagy is necessary to regrow axons and reestablish their connections. Thus, autophagy modulation might be important to achieve efficient regeneration in humans.
